Nagpur, also known as Orange City, is one of the industrial and busiest commercial cities in Maharashtra. Situated at the heart of India, Nagpur is a zero mile city, and all the distances are measured from that point only. Nagpur is the headquarters of the Vidarbha division, and is also the "second capital" of Maharashtra state. Few of the important administrative functions are carried out here, and one of three sessions of the Legislative Assembly is held once in a year.

Deogad, “Bakht Buland Shah”, in the year 1702, was responsible for the construction of this city. The city was named on the river Nag that flows through it. Earlier, Nagpur was said to be the capital of Madhya Bharat state (C.P. and Berar) after Indian independence and in 1960; then the Marathi majority Vidarbha region was combined to form the new state of Maharashtra.

One can find various tourist spots around Nagpur, including the places of pilgrimage and natural ecosystem. Nagpur is also known for its many lakes and music festivals. For maintaining, its cultural identity, the government organizes a week-long performance oriented Kalidas Festival every year. The South Central Zone Cultural Centre is also one of the major artistic forces in the city, managing a host of festivals, such as the Orange City Craft Mela and the very popular Folk Dance Festival.
Nagpur is well connected to almost all of the major cities of India, by air, road and rail.
Air: Sonegaon Airport at Nagpur is almost 8 Kms south of Nagpur city. This domestic airport is connected to Mumbai, Calcutta, Delhi Hyderabad, Nagpur, Bhubaneswar and Raipur.
Rail: Nagpur railway station is an important rail junction on the Central and Southeastern lines. Electrified broad gauge railway track connects Nagpur to all four major metros.
Road: The district is well connected by roads with all industrial centers of the Country. National Highways passing through Nagpur are Bombay Calcutta NH-6 & Kanyakumari Varanasi NH-7. |
