Located in the Amaravati district of Maharastra, Melghat is a popular Tiger Reserve wildlife sanctuary, covering the area of 1677 sq.km. It is about 225 km west of Nagpur, situated on the southern offshoot of the Satpura Hill Range called Gavilgarh hill in Central India. River Tapi is the northern boundary of the Park. |
| There are some rugged terrain and rocky ravines in Melghat that offer natural protection from the poachers. History: The Melghat tiger reserve was launched as wildlife sanctuary in 1967 and was declared as Tiger reserve in 1974 under the 'Project Tiger' which was a wildlife conservation project started in 1972 in India to protect the Bengal Tigers. And since then, it is popularly known for its scenic natural beauty and mainly for tigers. » Flora- there are about 700 naturalized plant species in the park, which belong to 400 genera that symbolize 97 families. The commonly found Flora species in the park include - spot 316 herbs species, 56 climbers, 66 shrubs species, 90 trees, 23 sedges, 99 grass species and some newly identified species of flora. » Fauna - the park is amazingly rich with fauna. Still, people mostly come here with the wish to spot tiger. There are around 80 Tigers in the park. The other Fauna species available in the Melghat are - Leopard, Sloth bear, Wild dog, Jackal, Sambar, Gaur, Barking deer, Nilgai, Cheetal, Chousinga, Ratel, Flying Squirrel, Wild boar, Langur, Rhesus monkey, Porcupine, Pangolin, Mouse deer, Python, Otter, Caracal and Black napped hare. How to Reach from Nagpur - Hiring a cab to go to Melghat is the easiest way to reach this national park. But, if interested to go by rail then Badnera is the closest Railway Station, from where you will easily get both bus and taxi to reach there.
